Time triggered pop-up forms

Time triggered pop-up forms

‘Pop-up’ or ‘overlay’ forms are an effective way to capture user attention and engage your website visitors. They are in essence forms displayed in a frame which appear over the main content of the page. The use of pop-up forms can vary from collecting email newsletter sign ups, to offering discounts or additional information..

Button Trigger

Following the instructions inside the forms section of the e-shot console, you would embed the button onto your web page by deploying a JavaScript and by placing an HTML button which triggers the form onto the page.

Time based trigger

Forms can be triggered by the amount of time the visitor of the webpage spends on the page. This can be achieved by adding an additional bit of code to your sign-up forms script; As we are no longer using a button to trigger the form, the HTML aspect of the sign-up form code is not needed.

An e-shot script typically would look like this:

<script type="text/JavaScript" async src="https://signup.es-mail.co.uk/Signup/123456789/Embed?frameOptions=0&width=auto&height=auto"></script>

To add time-based triggering, We would add the following code after the “height=auto” part of the code.

&loadAfterDelay=

Expected result:

<script type="text/JavaScript" async src="https://signup.es-mail.co.uk/Signup/123456789/Embed?frameOptions=0&width=auto&height=auto&loadAfterDelay="></script>

To control the amount of time until the pop up triggers, we can enter the time in milliseconds after the “=” sign. For example, to trigger the forms after 15 seconds. We would add 15000 to the end of the link, 15000 milliseconds is 15 seconds. This functionality operates only in milliseconds so adding “Ms” at the end of your time values is not needed.

&loadAfterDelay=15000

Expected result:

<script type="text/JavaScript" async src="https://signup.es-mail.co.uk/Signup/123456789/Embed?frameOptions=0&width=auto&height=auto&loadAfterDelay=15000"></script>

Once you have edited the script code, you are ready to place it on your webpage. This can be done by placing the scripts code into your webpage by directly editing the code, using a code snippet or a tag manager.

Why would you use a time-based pop up?

Increased Engagement: By appearing after the user has engaged with your content, the pop up will appear less intrusive and more contextually relevant increasing the chance of a successful form fill.

Maintain page design: This type of pop up is designed to integrate smoothly with your web page, they don't alter the existing layout of the page and appear only after a certain amount of time, minimising the disruption to the user’s experience.

User choice: Pop-ups offer an easy option for dismissal, respecting the user’s choice. If a visitor is not interested in the content of the pop up, they can quickly and easily click off the pop up to remove it from their view.

Time based pop-ups can be an extremely effective tool for increasing conversions and engagement, it is important to balance their use with a consideration of user experience. Overusing pop-ups or poorly timing them can lead to frustration and potentially drive users away. Testing and refinement are key to finding the perfect timing to ensure the highest chance of success
