Welcome to the team: Mark

Joining a new organisation is always an exciting journey, and for our newest team member, it’s been no exception. In this blog post, we’re delighted to introduce Mark, who has recently joined us and is already making an impression with his passion for helping clients achieve their goals and his enthusiasm for diving back into the world of local government communications.

We sat down with Mark to learn more about his early impressions, what drew him to the company, and how he spends his time outside of work. From track days in a self-built Caterham to competitive sailing and DIY adventures, Mark brings a wealth of experience, energy, and personality to the team. Read on to discover what makes him tick and how he’s found his first steps with us!

What are you most excited about in your new role?

I enjoy the whole process of genuinely helping clients do something better. And having enjoyed working in the local gov communications environment before, I'm happy to be returning to it.

What attracted you to this company/role?

I was recommended to check you guys out!  After the first interview, I realised we have plenty in common.  And I got very positive vibes from Ron and Dan.

How do you spend your free time?

I have a family with a wife and two young adults - it's a novelty to say that because my son just turned 18 and yesterday passed his driving test. Avoid roads near Southampton! I am often seen underneath a car, up a ladder, head buried in a cupboard attempting to fix something.  My wife also lets out her parent's house in Scotland, so that means trips north occasionally - and I'm expected to fix stuff there too!  Also, continuing the DIY theme, I took on a major project by building a car!  It was a new build, assembling components to complete the car - as opposed to the true kit car approach where men in jumpers rescue old and rusty MG parts to build from scratch.  The Caterham is great fun and when I can, I take it on track days.

What are your hobbies and how did you get into them?

When I'm not bodging up things at home, my other priority is to go sailing. I've sailed boats since I was a kid and started taking the racing more seriously in my late teens.  This year, I have qualified for a world championship in Weymouth, which will be a challenge. Over the years, I have bought hulls and fitted them out myself, which is greatly satisfying.

What book or movie left a lasting impression on you?

I enjoy historical dramas which illustrate people or events which have an impact on our lives today. An example is Saving Private Ryan - what those young men went through to drive out the horrors of Nazi tyranny should never be forgotten. On a lighter note, I enjoy comedies - Life of Brian being one of the greatest films ever made!

What steps do you take for personal growth and self-improvement?

I'm happy to take recommendations on events and courses that others have found useful.  Anything that will provide a better way of working and learning useful and relevant insights which can lead to greater success in my work.

If you could describe your first week in one word, what would it be?

Ears!

It’s been fantastic getting to know Mark. We’re excited to see how his skills and passion will shape his role and the impact he’ll have in supporting our clients. Welcome aboard, Mark—here’s to a bright future together!
